Program and Services: Activity Therapy

Activity Therapy

Our Activity Therapists and Activity Therapist Associates supervise the activity centers on each inpatient unit, and specialize in running group recreational activities.  They provide play opportunities for children to interact with peers and families in a natural, non-threatening environment through age-appropriate activities that include, but are not limited to, some of the following:  board games, video games, pool, air hockey, make believe play (dress up costumes, play kitchen, etc.), and arts and crafts.  These individuals also coordinate special events and assist families with a variety of special requests and needs.  These individuals also are available to work with patients on a one-on-one basis by staff referral or patient/family request.

5th, 6th and 7th Floor Activity Centers
Each of the three inpatient floors in Mott Hospital (5th, 6th, & 7th) has an Activity Center which provides programs, services and support for the families who are staying on these floors.  These Activity Centers allow the balance of self-directed play and structured activities which give hospitalized children a sense of normalcy in an unfamiliar environment.  Through the Activity Centers, Child Life professionals provide arts & crafts, music, games, and other recreational activities for all ages, and match them to each child’s interests and developmental needs.  Structured groups may include medical play, art and music therapy groups and structured developmental play.  Special events and holiday celebrations also take place in the Activity Centers.  Families are encouraged to participate.  Please check with your Child Life professional for Activity Center hours of operation.

 7th Floor Isolated Playroom

The 7th floor also has an Isolated Playroom which provides a space where children and families who are going through Bone Marrow Transplant, or other immune-compromised conditions, can play when they cannot join in activities in the Activity Center.  This room has special air filtering to protect these most vulnerable patients from airborn illness. But other than that, it contains many of the same toys, games and craft projects that are in the Activity Center.
