Child and Family Life

Program and Services: Hospital School Program

School Program

Undeniably, school plays a critical role in a child or teen’s life.  It provides structure and more importantly, keeps the child focused on the future.  When a child or teen is hospitalized or diagnosed with an illness, school attendance and the ability to maintain a normal routine of schoolwork become questionable.  At the University of Michigan C. S. Mott Children’s Hospital we offer the services of experienced, certified teachers to our hospitalized and outpatient population.

We encourage children, teens, and their families to visit the Mott Learning Center on the 6th level, room #F6555.  The center is generally open Monday through Friday, with morning and afternoon sessions.  Hours are posted but may be subject to change.  Bedside instruction is also available for those patients unable to leave their rooms or for those receiving their treatment in an outpatient clinic.  With your written permission, we will contact the child’s school and coordinate our educational efforts with the classroom teachers. Our goal will be to keep the child from falling behind or, when necessary, offering the appropriate remedial instruction   Be assured, your child or teen will be respected, his/her strengths and learning styles will be recognized, and the teachers will show that learning is indeed relevant, interesting, and even fun.  A complimentary service, we will gladly answer any questions or respond to any inquiries.  Please call 734-647-3169 or contact us via email.

School Re-entry Visit

School Program
To assist young people with academic concerns and returning to school after diagnosis, Child Life specialists visit schools and educate staff regarding all aspects of the child's illness and treatment. When requested, special presentations are offered for classmates.
