Service Projects
Service projects are a great way for kids to help the patients staying at Mott Children’s Hospital. Bedside craft kits are quite popular among the patients, and kids interested in helping to make the stay of patients a little easier can put together bedside craft kits.
U-M Dance Marathon's Mini-Marathon program
The University of Michigan Dance Marathon's (UMDM) Mini-Marathon program empowers middle and high school students to take on leadership roles to help further UMDM's mission of raising funds and awareness for pediatric rehabilitation programs in SE Michigan. The Mini-Marathon program allows middle and high schools to work hand in hand with students at the University of Michigan to help plan an execute an event to support the pediatric rehabilitation programs that UMDM funds. For more information, please contact umdm.outreach@umich.edu.
Bedside Crafts
Bedside craft kits contain a craft that patients can do in the comfort of their room. When putting together bedside craft kits, please include instructions and a photo/image of the completed project. Past donations of bedside craft kits include make‐your‐own puppet, friendship bracelets, and beaded keychains. The materials, instructions, and photo can be placed a ziptop bag. It would also be helpful to place a label on the bag with the name of the craft.
Attached you can find a few bedside craft kit ideas that can be put together for our patients. The needed materials for the craft are listed as well, and the instructions can be printed out and placed in a ziptop bag.
Store‐bought bedside craft kits are also appreciated. Store‐bought bedside craft kits come with the materials and instructions for a craft. This is a great option for community members who would like to donate bedside craft kits, but may not have the time to gather the materials and put them together themselves.
Other service projects
In addition to putting together bedside craft kits for our patients, community members are invited to have collection drives for Mott Hospital. Possible collection drives include:
- Book Drive:
- Books collected for Mott Hospital will go into the Giving Library. The Giving Library has books for children of all ages. Hospital volunteers load up the Giving Library Cart with books from the Giving Library and go to the inpatient floors. Patients are able to choose a book of the cart and get to take their book with them when they go home. Our best effort is made to ensure all patients who come through the hospital receive a book and a blanket. All book donations to Mott Hospital should be brand new.

- Gift Card Drive
- Store Gift Cards: Store gift cards to stores that have a variety of merchandise and that are located in many communities are great for patients and families, as families can run out and get items that they might have forgotten at home. Store gift cards are also easy to distribute to patients and families, as they are appropriate for all ages.
- Gas Cards: Due to high gas prices and a poor economy, the need for gas cards for Mott patients and families has risen over 700% in the last four years; 6 % of parents nationwide report that they have postponed a medical visit for their children or postponed buying medication because of high gas prices. Help relieve some of the financial stress for patients and families by having a gas card drive for Mott Hospital.
- Restaurant Gift Cards: Gift cards to restaurants that deliver to Mott Hospital (Domino’s Pizza, Jimmy John’s Sandwiches, etc.) give patients and families options for meals outside of the hospital cafeteria.
