How Patients Come to Mott
Patients are typically admitted to Mott Hospital in one of two ways, both of which are managed by a physician:
- through direct admit from surgery or the ER
- through hospital to hospital transfer
Direct Admit
Direct admit basically means that your child is already at Mott receiving some type of care when it is determined that he or she needs to be admitted for further treatment or evaluation. This is most often the case with Emergency Room and Surgery patients. If your child’s doctor sends him or her to the Emergency Room, that doctor will work with ER staff to facilitate hospital admission. If you bring your child to the Emergency Room in crisis circumstances, the on-staff health care team will tend to your child and determine whether advanced care and admission are necessary. In addition, if your child has surgery and it is determined that he or she needs to remain in the hospital for care or observation, the surgeon and health care team will handle admission arrangements.
Hospital to Hospital Transfer
Because Mott provides expert care for some of the most complex and serious cases and because Mott is one of a few children’s hospitals to provide certain specialty care, other hospitals in Michigan, the United States and the World send their patients here. If your child’s physician recommends a transfer to Mott, he or she will facilitate the transfer process, including connecting with the appropriate U-M physician and health care team.
Specialty Care
If your child requires a specialty care appointment at Mott, the primary care physician will make arrangements in most cases. If your health plan doesn’t require a referral for specialty care, you can call the University of Michigan Physician Referral Line at 1-800-211-8181 to schedule this appointment.
Primary Care and Outpatient Services
If you are looking for a primary care physician, you can call the University of Michigan Physician Referral Line and speak with one of our specially trained referral coordinators. These individuals work one-on-one with consumers who are new to the area, recently changed health coverage, want to change primary care physicians, want a second opinion or need information on choosing the right physician to accommodate their needs. The Physician Referral Service is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET and can be reached toll-free at 1-800-211-8181. More about the UMHS Physician Referral Service.
